There are so many types of prams and pushchairs out there that it’s difficult knowing what’s going to be right for you and your new baby. The first thing to do when you’re trying to pick the right pram for your new arrival is to think about your lifestyle. Obviously, things won’t be the same as they were before, but you may well have some idea about how and where you plan to use your buggy.
*Will you be using the buggy off-road?
*Will you be using the pushchair for long trips out?
*Will you need to carry the pushchair upstairs?
*Will you use public transport?
*What storage space do you have?
*What space will you have in your car boot?
*Do you want to use the same pushchair from birth, right up to four years?
*Will you be travelling by car a lot?
Once you have an idea about what type of pushchair is right for you. It’s time to think about the practicalities of fitting the pushchair into your life (literally!). You need to make sure that whatever buggy you opt for fits into your home and your car – some of the bigger models, particularly those that come with a separate carrycot unit, can take up a lot of space and you might struggle to fit anything else into your boot! Equally, if storage is limited at home you need to consider whether you have space for a bigger model – maybe you won’t love it quite so much after tripping over it for the millionth time…! If you’ll be carrying the pushchair to an upstairs flat, or moving it from car to house regularly then the weight will be especially important to you, there are some great lightweight models out there, just as tough as their heavier counterparts, thanks to the wonders of aluminium!
Another crucial point to consider is whether you’ll be using public transport with your buggy in tow. If so a model with a one-handed fold mechanism will come in very handy! Struggling to fold up your pushchair, while holding a baby and all your shopping is not fun, so the easier the folding mechanism the better!
Finally you need to think about how long you plan to use the pushchair – if you want to use the same pram from birth right up until four years, then you need a versatile 3 in 1 pushchair, that will grow with your baby.
Then, if you really want to think ahead, it’s worth taking into account whether you want to use the same buggy for any future babies; if so you need a durable model, with cheaply replaceable parts and changeable seat covers.
And, one final thing… pretty much all buggies these days are baby travel systems – it’s near essential; you can move baby from car to pram and vice versa with the minimum disruption. But, if you’re looking at a travel system you need to look at the car seat as well to make sure it has a high safety rating and generous padding to keep baby nice and snug.
Ok, so there’s a lot to think about… but once you have an idea of the basic things you need from your pram you can start picking from the fab selection out there!
